HEMA FREE 

(Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate)
  • What it is: A tiny, highly reactive chemical monomer used to bond traditional gel polish to the natural nail.
  • Why it’s bad: Because its molecules are tiny, they easily penetrate skin cells. If it touches the skin before curing, it is the #1 cause of severe allergic contact dermatitis in the nail industry. Once an acrylate allergy develops, it is permanent and can even prevent you from having medical dental fillings or joint replacements later in life.

TPO FREE

(Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide)
  • What it is: A traditional chemical curing agent (photoinitiator) used to harden gel polish under a lamp.
  • Why it’s bad: It was officially classified as a reprotoxic chemical (toxic to human reproduction and fertility). Because of this health risk, it was completely banned from cosmetics in the EU and UK in September 2025.

FORMALDAHYDE FREE

  • What it is: A powerful preservative and hardening chemical frequently used in low-grade nail strengtheners and polishes.
  • Why it’s bad: It is a known human carcinogen (cancer-causing agent). Inhaling its vapors or absorbing it through the nail bed causes severe eye, nose, and respiratory irritation, along with chemical skin burns.

Formaldehyde Resin

  • What it is: A chemical polymer byproduct of formaldehyde used to improve the adhesion and durability of nail coatings.
  • Why it’s bad: While not as toxic as pure formaldehyde, it is a major skin allergen. It frequently causes itchy rashes, contact dermatitis, and swollen cuticles for users with sensitive skin.

Toluene

  • What it is: A harsh petroleum-derived solvent used to give traditional nail polish a smooth, uniform liquid texture.
  • Why it’s bad: It is a potent neurotoxin. Inhaling it causes headaches, dizziness, nausea, and fatigue (the classic toxic "nail salon smell"). Prolonged exposure can damage the central nervous system and cause reproductive harm.

DBP 

(Dibutyl Phthalate)
  • What it is: A toxic plasticizer used to prevent nail polish from becoming overly brittle and cracking.
  • Why it’s bad: DBP is a severe endocrine disruptor linked to hormonal imbalances, birth defects, and organ toxicity. It has been banned from cosmetics in the European Union for years due to its reproductive risks.

Camphor

  • What it is: A synthetic chemical or natural resin used to give nail polish its high-gloss, reflective finish.
  • Why it’s bad: In large quantities or enclosed spaces, camphor vapors cause nausea, dizziness, and severe headaches. It can also strip the natural lipids from the nail plate, leaving nails dry, brittle, and yellowed.

Xylene

  • What it is: An aggressive industrial solvent used to thin out cosmetic liquids and keep them from clumping.
  • Why it’s bad: Xylene vapors are highly irritating to the respiratory tract and skin. It is an allergen and central nervous system depressant, causing lightheadedness and long-term toxicity to the liver and kidneys with heavy exposure.

Parabens

  • What it is: A family of cheap chemical preservatives used to prevent the growth of mold and bacteria in liquid cosmetics.
  • Why it’s bad: Parabens can mimic estrogen in the body. They act as endocrine disruptors and have been flagged in multiple studies for potentially driving hormone-related health issues.

Phthalates

  • What it is: A broader chemical group (including DBP) used to make plastic elements within cosmetics flexible and pliable.
  • Why it’s bad: Like parabens, they are notorious hormone disruptors that interfere with the endocrine system, negatively impacting reproductive health and causing developmental issues.

Ethyl Tosylamide

  • What it is: A plasticizer that helps nail polish dry into a flexible, long-lasting film that adheres tightly to the nail.
  • Why it’s bad: It is highly restricted in many countries because it is a known skin allergen. Furthermore, because it is a sulfonamide derivative, there are rising concerns in the medical community about its contribution to antibiotic resistance.

Synthetic Fragrances

  • What it is: Artificial perfumes or chemical masking agents added to disguise the natural chemical scent of a product.
  • Why it’s bad: Fragrance blends are treated as "trade secrets," meaning companies don't have to disclose the hundreds of individual chemicals inside them. They are among the top causes of sudden cosmetic allergic reactions, eczema flares, and asthma triggers.
